fruits and vegetables

while fall is time for grape harvest it is also a time for vegetable harvest.  potatoes, mushrooms, zucchini, mushrooms, baby lettuce.. the list could go on.  if you are like me and like to take advantage of the seasons and buy what is fresh at the local market then you should try pairing those vegetables with a great all around wine.  Pinot Grigio or Pinot Gris has an acidity and fresh flavors that mesh well with that of fall vegetables, or any vegetables for that matter.  it is the single most imported white wine in the united states and is easily forgotten behind the bold chardonnays and the grassy sauvignon blancs.  i have compiled a list of some of my favorite Pinot Grigios for under $25.

  1. 2008 MacMurray Ranch Pinot Gris, Sonoma Coast – $20: Pineapple and apple flavors that has a lemon aftertaste.  It is very crisp and great for most foods and hot days.
  2. 2008 Castello di Gabbiano Pinot Grigio, Italy $10: has characteristics of bitter lemon pith with almond aromas and flavors. nicely balanced acidity, it makes the perfect partner for fresh tomatoes—and it’s amazingly good for the price.
  3. Benessere Vineyards Pinot Grigio, Napa Valley- $22: jasmine and honeysuckle nose with grapefruit taste.  underbelly tastes of melon, peach, and pineapple.  it is crisp and clean and can be paired with any vegetable and great for an appertief with some cheese.
  4. 2007 Kings Estate Pinot Grigio, Oregon- $15: has a straw color with a citrus and honey aroma, very tropical mouth followed by more citrus.  is very balanced and made organically.
  5. 2007 Dellatori Pinot Grigio, Italy $9: a very appealing bright blue bottle.  it has a slight mineral nose that once allowed to cool opens into a light citrus.  it is neither bold nor bland nor sweet nor dry it is just a easy to drink bottle for a decent price.
  6. Gaetano d’aguino Pinot Grigio- $3.99: this one was stolen from my tj’s list and is a very cheap favorite of mine for hot days and veggies.  it is crisp and balanced with hints of honey and citrus fruit.
  7. 2006 Isabel, Marlborough New Zealand-$11: very clean tropical nose, citrus acidity  and very balanced.  a great bottle.
